Winter Fun at White Pines Ranch

Winter is a magical time at White Pines Ranch. The scenery is breathtaking when snow covers the pine trees and all of the pastures are covered in a blanket of white! Weekends in December are much like any other weekend at the ranch with a few changes.   Daytime activities include horseback riding, sledding, cross-country skiing, hiking, crafts, wilderness survival, initiative tasks, horse grooming, orienteering, mapping and horse saddling…whew…that’s a lot to do! Saturday night you’ll enjoy country line dancing, a hayride, bingo and a campfire sing-a-long before heading to your bunks at 9:30 p.m. After breakfast on Sunday, we offer activities until 2:00 p.m. and then it’s time to head home.

 

Pinecrest Community Craft & Vendor Fair

Saturday, December 2           9 am – 3 pm

Pinecrest Grove Community Center 500 Evergreen Lane, Mt. Morris

The fair will feature direct sales vendors and various handmade items for sale, including bags, quilts, blankets, metal crafts, homemade vanilla, floral arrangements and cards. A bake sale also will be held. Proceeds will benefit the Good Samaritan Fund, which helps to cover the cost of care for residents who have outlived their financial resources.

 

 

 

ENCORE! Mt. Morris Old Sandstone Art Gallery Holiday Art Show

December 2-10     Downtown Mt. Morris – 122 Wesley Avenue

Mark your calendars! Encore! Mt. Morris will be opening its annual holiday art show in the Old Sandstone Gallery on Saturday, December 2nd as part of the Christmas on the Square community celebration. This year’s free show will feature unique hand-made wood carvings and other holiday-oriented wood objects, as well as festive decorations and lighting.

Opening hours will be 3:00-7:00pm. Hot cider and home-made cookies will be served. Music will also enliven the holiday spirit. Subsequent art show hours will include December 3rd, before (1-2:30) and after (5:00-7:00pm) the community Contata (Trinity Lutheran Church). December 9 and 10, the holiday art show will also be open to the public from 3:00-7pm each day. The Old Sandstone Gallery is located in downtown Mt. Morris, next door to the Reckmeyer Band Shell, 122 Wesley Ave.

 

Annual Community Christmas Cantata

Dec. 3, at 3 p.m., at Trinity Lutheran Church, 308 E. Brayton Road, Mount Morris

There is a singular holiday event so compelling that it draws musicians and vocalists from all over northwest Illinois to perform, for free, year after year.  Since its inception in 2004, the concert has been offered free to the public, with proceeds from donations given to local charities. For the eleventh year, the beneficiaries will be food pantries Loaves and Fish in Mount Morris and Life-Line in Oregon, which have each received, on average, about $500 each year since 2010.

 

 

The Village Bakery Cooking Class

Making gingerbread cookies

 

Join the Village Bakery and their talented staff during the holiday season for an exciting baking experience. This is a family oriented program. Each participant should be accompanied by a parent or grandparent. K-3rd graders are invited to bring an adult and bake and decorate one dozen cookies to take home. Cost: $15 fee or $18 non-resident fee. Call the Oregon Park District to register at 815.732.3101.    Deadline to register is December 3.

 

 

 

Geminid Meteor Watch

December 14, 7-10 p.m.     Weiskopf Observatory, Byron Forest Preserve District

Watch for meteors under a moonless sky. Geminids are bright, colorful and can be seen at a rate of 100 meteors per hour. Dress for the weather; bring lawn chairs, blankets or sleeping bags. This is a free event and all ages are welcome.   Click here for information.

Want to test your feats of strength this holiday season?  Join the party by registering for the Seinfeld-themed Fat Tire Festivus winter bicycle event presented by White Pelican. The 8.5 mile course offers a mixed-terrain experience of Oregon, Illinois including the Rock River, historic Riverview Cemetery, and several city parks (Click for map).  Although fat bikes are preferred, the short but challenging course is accessible to most off-road bikes. Participants are able to register for either a fun casual ride or a competitive division with prizes for men, women, and youth. The ride will be held snow or shine.  An after-party is planned.

Take Your Grandparents to Scrooge Matinee*

This wacky, zany, audience participation comedy is a must see for your holiday entertainment plans. Many families consider it a Christmas tradition and return year after year.  The story line is based on a loosely adapted version of Charles Dickens’ timeless classic, “A Christmas Carole”. The Pines has taken this well-known drama and turned it into a side-splitting comedy for all ages including senior bus groups, families and company Christmas parties. Book your tickets soon (815-946-3817) as all shows will sell out quickly.

*Grandparents get in for the same price as Children, only $21 per ticket. Mom’s and Dad’s pay the regular $30. This show is definitely rated “G” for Grandparents!!

 

 

 

 

FREE Family Movie Night: Oregon Together Presents “Beauty & the Beast Enchanted Christmas”!

December 16 Doors open at 6:30 pm, Movie Starts at 7 pm,      Oregon Coliseum

Oregon Together, Sycamore Theater/Hopper’s Poppers, and Oregon Elementary (OES) present another free movie night at the Coliseum! Chairs are available, but you might want to bring blankets and pillows for a front row seat! Admission is free. Concessions will be available for purchase and voluntary donations are accepted to help support future movie nights. Outside food and beverages are not permitted. Children age 10 and under must be accompanied by a parent or other adult.
