Where the locals go

One of the top questions we get asked by visitors is “where do the locals go?” Locals support local to be sure, but there are some things that we’ve noticed are such an “Oregon thing to do” that we couldn’t help but help spotlight them a little. For our visitors who want a taste of local flair: come and spend the day with Liz Vos going.. well, where the locals go.

Breakfast in Oregon A pretty staple morning starts at sunrise, and that’s where we’ll go first naturally. Visit our friends at Sunrise 3 Restaurant located at 116 N 4th st in Oregon. On their menu you’ll find everything you’re craving, and they know what they’re doing. They’ve been serving up homestyle meals for decades. This family run restaurant will be sure to start your Oregon adventures off the right way with huge portions and friendly service. Be sure to tell Larry we said “hi!”

Fishing (or watching the fishermen) is next on your local itinerary. You’re going to make your way over to the either side of the dam (we’re partial to behind Conover Square Mall located at 201 N 3rd St Oregon.) The Rock River (by us at least) is teaming with a wide variety of wildlife both above and below water. Common catches are catfish, sheepshead, walleye, redhorse, and carp. The water quality is great thanks to local efforts to maintain the riverfront clean up. You can tell whether or not the water is clean by the variety of fish and wildlife in the area. Oregon is home to a great variety. Most notable are our large population of white pelicans and bald eagles. You’ll find locals and visitors alike throwing a line in or simply enjoying the scenery. If you ask me I might give you a tip on where to find the best fishing holes there.

Time for a late lunch at Oregon Park West located at 1402 Koontz Place in Oregon. Beautiful playgrounds, splash pad, skate park, basketball & tennis courts and more will help you work up an appetite for certain! You’re welcome to grill out and relax in the shade under the pavilion. Pro tip: locals grab their grill gear at SuperValu and enjoy their 5 for $5 deals.

Live music at the WILDEST local spot in town! At the end of the night you’re going to want to grab a drink and listen to live music with the locals. We’re a small town.. so we hope you know that “wild” is a relative term which we say with a smile about our friends at Tipsy Hog located at 101 S 3rd st Oregon. Locally owned and operated: you will likely be served by the owner John. He’ll crack open a can of ice cold beer and the folks at the bar next to you will tell you a story or two (mostly true stories, but sometimes we’ll tell a tall tale or two.) Cash only, but there’s an atm in the back and someone will help point you in the right direction.
